Change a website's domain

Changing a website's domain swaps its primary address, for example when you move a site from a temporary Templ address to your real domain, or from one domain to another. Templ runs the database search-replace for you as part of the change.

Change the domain

  1. Click on Websites in the left menu in the Templ Panel.
  2. Click on the website that you want to change domain for.
  3. Click on Edit Website Details.

  4. Under Domain, select a domain in the drop-down list.

  5. Scroll all the way down and click Continue, that's it!

How long does it take?

How long the change takes to be visible depends on where the domain's DNS is managed.

  • DNS managed by Templ - the necessary DNS records are updated automatically and the change usually takes effect within a few minutes.
  • External DNS, A record change - typically minutes to a few hours, bounded by the record's current TTL.
  • External DNS, nameserver change - can take up to 48 hours to propagate globally. To make the switch faster, we recommend lowering the TTL and updating the DNS records at your current DNS host before changing nameservers, so the cutover is bounded by your current TTL rather than full nameserver propagation.
