Backup retention

How long a backup stays available depends on whether it was created automatically or manually, and where it's stored. This page lists the retention period for each type so you know how far back you can restore from.

Retention by backup type

• Automatic daily backups: always stored remotely and kept for 30 days.
• Manual remote backups: kept for 90 days.
• Manual local backups (stored in the backups folder in the site's home directory, ~/backups): never deleted automatically, kept indefinitely.

Backups of deleted websites

When you delete a website, its remote backups are kept for up to 30 days. Within that window you can still restore from them, even though the original site is gone. After 30 days they are permanently removed.

If you're deleting a site you might want back, download a backup first so you keep a copy regardless of retention.

Where are local backups stored?

In the backups folder in the site's home directory (~/backups), next to the webroot. You can list and download the files over SFTP or SSH, and they show up at the top of the Backup list in the Templ Panel.

What happens to local backups when I delete a site?

They are permanently deleted along with the site. This applies to both production and staging sites - each has its own environment, and local backups live inside it. Only remote backups survive a deletion, for up to 30 days. Download a backup or store it remotely before deleting a site.
