Templ SMTP

Websites hosted by Templ are configured to send transactional emails with our SMTP server automatically, with no setup from you.

What Templ SMTP is for

Templ SMTP supports ordinary person-to-person correspondence and transactional email - messages your site sends automatically in response to a user action. Use an email client for correspondence; website email works automatically. Typical website messages include:

Password resets
Order and payment confirmations
Account notifications
Contact and form submission notifications

Do not use Templ SMTP for bulk or marketing email such as newsletters, campaigns, or promotional blasts. For mass mailings, use a dedicated email marketing service (for example Mailchimp or Brevo) connected to your site instead.

Sending limits

To protect deliverability and prevent abuse, outgoing email through Templ SMTP is rate limited based on your website's plan.

Hitting a limit doesn't lose emails. Any messages over the limit are held in a queue on the server (/var/lib/msmtpq/queue/) and sent automatically as soon as the limit allows, so delivery is delayed rather than dropped.

On the Custom plan, the limits can be raised manually by us when needed, in line with your site's size. If you're hitting the limit on a lower plan, contact support to discuss upgrading and confirm the applied sending limit.

Sending from your own address

Set the sender address in WordPress or the plugin sending the messages, such as WooCommerce. Using that address does not require creating a mailbox or forwarding address at Templ. Keep your existing incoming email setup and follow our SPF and DKIM and domain verification guidance for sending through Templ.

Troubleshoot missing emails

For authentication errors, rejected senders, or delayed delivery, see Website emails aren't arriving. If a new trial site reports an authentication failure, support can check whether its SMTP account needs activation.

Where to find your SMTP settings

Your site's SMTP credentials are in the Templ Panel under Email → SMTP Settings. You can use them in any email client that supports a custom SMTP server.

When sending emails using our SMTP server it's always recommended to make sure you have added our SPF and DKIM records, as well as verified your domain in order to achieve the best possible email deliverability.
