Site is down or inaccessible
When your site won't load, the first thing to work out is whether the site is actually down for everyone, or only unreachable from where you are. Templ monitors every hosted site and is automatically alerted when a site goes down, so if it's a genuine outage on our side, we're likely already investigating.
Our uptime checks request every site at least every 3 minutes and alert us the moment one stops returning a normal response.
Check whether the site is really down
- Open the site in a private/incognito window, or on another network (for example your phone on mobile data). If it loads there, the problem is local to your browser or network, not the site.
- Try an external checker such as Is It Down Right Now to see if others can reach it.
- Clear your browser cache and cookies - a stale cache or cookie can make a working site look broken. See Clear your browser cache and cookies.
Common causes
- A recent change broke the site. A plugin or theme update, or an edit to a theme file, can take a site offline. Roll back the change, or deactivate plugins and themes to isolate it.
- A PHP error. If you see a blank page or an error instead of your site, follow Site shows an error.
- Domain or DNS misconfiguration. If the browser can't find the site at all, the domain may not be pointing at Templ. Check your domain and DNS settings.
- An expired domain or SSL certificate. An expired domain stops resolving; an expired certificate produces a security warning that blocks access.
Still unreachable?
If the site is down for everyone and you can't trace it to a recent change, domain, or certificate issue, contact support so we can investigate from our side.
